Why Don't We Gebv,
Reacquainted ?
A Chasidic Jew uses a torch to kosher
pots for Passover.
Israeli-born children, singing the same
songs and telling the same stories my
family was telling back in Detroit.
We also discussed topics closer to
home for Israelis, like their medical
rescue mission to the Macedonia-
Kosovo border. We talked about the
reactions of Palestinians to the NATO
strikes in Yugoslavia and Israel's offer
to welcome any of the 3,000
Yugoslavian Jews requesting entry,
including seven from Kosovo and
Belgrade who spent the seder with the
Netanyahu family.
I sat surrounded by cousins who
came home from the army to be at
the seder, discussing the 33 political
parties and six candidates running for
Israeli prime minister next month.
We talked about daylight savings
time, and how, for them, it would
begin on Friday, the day school and
work schedules are shortened in
preparation for Shabbat. (Sunday in
Israel is a regular, full day of business
and studies.)
After the seder, we put away the
Hagaddot that we had used without the
benefit of English translation. (Why
would Israeli books be translated into a
foreign language?) But the difference
here was that they were being stored
until next year, not the next night, as
Israelis observe only one seder.
Some Detroit visitors to Israel fol-
lowed the words of their Detroit-area
rabbi instructing that if they ever
intended to live in Israel, they should
do like the Israelis and hold a single
seder. Others opted for all-American
second seders.
The rest of Passover was an equal-
ly enlightening experience. We spent
a large part of it in Israeli restau-
rants. All Israeli eating establish-
ments that are kosher during the
year either close down for the week
or become kosher for Passover.
What else would you expect from a
country that has a giant kosher
restaurant in their YMCA?
The kosher Burger King near our
hotel had a Passover menu. We saw
