the government has set aside funds for research on alternative medicine. "My patients want to be more in control of their health and using sup- plements and nutritionals gives them that opportunity." In theory, individuals can get all the nutrients they need from healthy eating and regular exercise. The reality is few of us are going to eat like that. In addition, as we get older, lack of appetite, loss of taste and smell and denture problems make it even harder to maintain a healthy diet. Whatever the solution, it's a good idea to keep your physician informed about what you're taking. Many doc- tors weren't trained in nutrition and may be biased against taking supple- ments. Do a little research and bring along supporting materials when you visit your doctor. On the other hand, while some supplements are clearly safe, others may be dangerous in high dosages or when taken with medications. Your physician and pharmacist should have the answers, but it's the patient's responsibility to ask the questions. 17 Notes Ellen Blau of Bingham Farms will receive the National Layperson Support Award from the National Headache Foundation.
