students are sharing their her-
itage by participating in the
Andrew Lloyd Webber musi-
cal Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor
Dreamcoat. A biblical story coming to
life on stage could potentially be a diffi-
cult role to play.
Yet this group of Jewish students •
from North Farmington admits that
their Judaism has helped them under-
stand — and portray — the storyline.
And being in the play has given them
some lessons and understanding as well.
Senior Rachel Elrom feels she is
celebrating her heritage, and reaffirm-
ing a part of ir. As a Jewish teen, it is
great to be able to be a part of some-

thino g like this."

The teens are encouraged that
Webber took a biblical story and made
it entertainment. "People can enjoy it
and that makes. it really cool to be a
part of," commented sophomore
Rebecca Singer, who is playing a wife.
Senior Jeff Shiffman, who plays
Joseph, believes his Jewish background
"makes me feel a part of the story. The
understanding and heritage that I have
really helps me get into character.
Senior Alexis Pone, a wife in the play,
is "proud to be Jewish and have the
background knowledge of the play. That
gives me an advantage in my acting."
A humorous musical portraying a
biblical story may seem like a noncha-
lant way to bring together a lot of cul-
ture, but senior Rich Plotkin, who
plays Joseph's brother Levi, disagrees.
Doing the motions and singing
the songs pushes on the interest of the
story, and makes it a fun adaptation
that I can relate to," he said.
Pone agrees, adding, "The Bible is
something I usually feel removed from
when I hear a story, but this gives me
a feeling of the whole scenario,
because I am actually in it."
Assistant play director/teacher
Susan Cobb said Joseph was picked
"because we have a lot of strong male
actors." She has not discussed the

meaning of this play with her stu-
dents, yet she feels that the "Old
Testament Bible story can impact you
no matter what you are." She is excit-
ed that some of her actors can "bring
their knowledge to their roles."
Senior Dan Freeman, in the role of
Reuben, believes the play has taught
him "that there are many lessons to be
learned from the Torah, and this
musical has shown me that."
Having traveled to Israel was a very
strong factor in the some of the actors'
comfort with the material. Shiffman gets
the "same tight feeling of feeling close to
our people in the play as I did in Israel.
Being with a lot of Jewish kids (in Israel
and in the play) helps me understand
the story so I can better portray it." For
senior Ryan Hertz, "going to Israel last
summer allows me to know more about
the history and times and I am able to
relate to my character of the brother
Naphtali better."
