In a short visit to Morocco, the importance that Jews once played in the
country is not readily apparent Much ofJewish Morocco is hidden from
view, but with the right guide, a tourist can gain a rich understanding not
only of the role of Jews in Moroccan society, but also tithe fascinating
role of Moroccan JEWS in the Jewish world_ Jews and Arabs lived a
symbiotic existence until the ntiddlt of the twentieth century. Moroccan
Ling: protected the Jews from harm and helped some of them develop the
wealth that sustained the monarchy for many years. Today. no more than
5,000 Jolts remain, compared to 300.000 in 1950. Hived in Morocco from
1988-1992 and had the opportunity to visit dozens of Jewish communities
and hundred ofJewish sites throughout the country. Come join me as I

ing Jewish community of
more than 300,000;
today, after a mass immi-
gration to Israel in the late 1940s and
1950s, there are fewer than 5,000
Jews, and Jewish sites around the
country are decaying or disappearing.
Some of that rich heritage is on dis-
play at a Web site authored by Rick
Gold, a U.S. foreign service officer
who became deeply immersed in the
Moroccan Jewish heritage during a
tour of duty there in the late 1980s.
"In a short visit to Morocco, the
importance that Jews once played in

Gold writes. "Much of Jewish
Morocco is hidden from view, but

Moroccan Jews in the Jewish

Gold wants to be your guide, and
does a credible job. He starts
with a brief, well-written history
of the Jews in Morocco and a
description of the role they played in
Moroccan society and history.
He then provides a city-by-city tour
of Jewish sites, complete with pictures
— small and a little fuzzy, but enough
to give visitors a taste of what this
country has to offer.
Gold speaks of the Jewish-
Muslim co-existence that character-
ized Morocco until the middle of
this century. But he eschews poli-
tics; this is a cultural and travel site,
designed only to convey something
of the flavor of a land that owes
much to its largely departed. Jewish
population.
There's nothing flashy here. The
value is in concise organization and
the obvious passion the author
brings to the subject.
