from one location to another ... It was
mind-boggling to see the very talented
presentations.
The entertainers impersonate show-
biz celebrities and use no lip syncing
... Their almost-alike voices are not
fake ... no recordings, discs or tapes
accompany the lip movements.
They may not look exactly like the
but they're made up to give a
celebs
similar impression, wearing the same
style clothes and whatever.
The Toronto company for this
appearance had the Blues Brothers,
Garth Brooks, Ritchie Valens, Tina
Turner, Bruce Springsteen and Elvis
Presley.
On the recommendation of Audrey
Pearl and hubby Cy Feldman, Frieda
and I went to Bellini's Ristorante in
Yorkville for an Italian dinner.
If people expect a traditional Italian
meal when going to Toronto, then
Bellini's is not the place to visit ... It is
classic Tuscan ... away from the cream
sauces of northern Italy and the tomato
sauce of the south ... The emphasis is
on fresh herbs, garlic and olive oil.
Bruschetta bread at Bellini's has
tomatoes loosely piled on top, not
baked in ... Caesar salad is three stalks
of romaine lettuce brushed with a
Caesar dressing ... Frieda loves escargot
... But not like those served here ... over
polenta and saturated with a sauce.
Bellini's is a pleasant little restau-
rant with two soft, elegant rooms ...
Its menu is a la carte and expensive.
Frieda's Osso Bucco was very tasty
and tender ... My pan-seared salmon
couldn't have been better.
The Royal York Hotel bell captain
said that we'd find the delicatessen
we were looking for just down the
street ... And there it was ...
Shopsy's on Yonge and Front, opened
in 1921 by Harry and Jennie
Shopsowitz ... followed by their son,
Sam "Shopsy" Shopsowitz, who
became known as Canada's corned beef
king, and brother, Izzy, in the late '40s.
Shopsy's is now owned by Lew
Allen ... three, full-scale delicatessens
and one at Maple Leaf Gardens ...
they have the traditional sandwiches
and dishes available in a Jewish deli-
catessen ... The onions and eggs were
not like those made by Hy Horenstein
or his late brother, Max, but passable.
Insofar as the Royal York Hotel is
concerned, I'd stay there again any-
time ... Thanks again, Jewish News
guys and gals.
PLEASE NOTE ... La Bistecca
Italian Grille, with its low-fat
Piedmontese beef, is on Plymouth
Road in Plymouth, not Livonia. L 1
