Michigan's success is a testament in part to the contributions from its broad racial, ethnic, and religious

Converting v. Reform Judaism

I recently went to a Reform service and
was amazed at all the interfaith marriages
While I find it commendable that both
parents are \killing to raise their children
within the confines of Reform Judaism, I
continue to question the message it is
sending some children. 'Wouldn't it be so
much easier if one parent converted to
their spouse's religion for the benefit of
the child? While I, personally, shudder at
the thought of losing a Jew to another
faith, it saddens me to think of a child
growing up without the benefit of a firm
and substantial religious background. I
believe that providing a child with a strong
sense of self-esteem is often initiated by
an unwavering set of family values, the
cornerstone of which is a common
religious foundation.

Ms. Stabenow. you proudly told the Detroit News that your parents taught you "to respect everyone."
[3-20-99] But your public remarks suggest that you respect Gedffrey Fieger's views. Please understand
how hurtful these comments are to so many people in our state. We would appreciate if you would show
respect for our views.

We do not agree. The Democratic Party must not be "open" to accept the views that Geoffrey Fieger
espouses.

The Detroit News columnist, George Weeks, recently reported, "Stabenow says Fieger contributed to her
1994 bid for governor." [3-16-99] The Oakland Press quoted you recently, "Geoff has to make his own
decisions, but I would welcome his support. He believes very passionately that the party should be open
to everyone and-I agree with him." [3-30-99]
