Rabbi Ponn, who has been chaplain
for over nine years, brought in food
warmers from his synagogue ... Unlike
years ago, there are no banquets at
Jackson ... The kitchen is now used sole-
ly for prison food service in the large
"mess" hall ... This is why there was no
chicken soup at the Jackson Prison com-
plex Passover seder ... No way to heat it.
A number of years ago, a court
order had to be gotten that would
allow Jewish inmates to be brought
together from other parts of the prison
complex ... It was a hotly-contested
issue at the time but that court order
remains in effect.
Years before, when I used to go to
Jackson with Rabbi Joshua Sperka and
later with Sammy Lieberman, there
was a reciprocal agreement with the
prison ... Its non-Jewish guards would
wait on tables at Jewish holiday din-
ners ... and the Jewish inmates served
them at non-Jewish functions.
A large kitchen with workers like
Harry Fleischer did yeoman service in
making sure the inmates enjoyed won-
derful meals ... There was always more
than enough, and some of the inmates
could hide a piece of chicken in their
shirt to take back for joyful thawing
in their cell.
The thought of a buffet at
Passover time was unheard of ...
However, times have changed ...
Jackson Prison is now a complex of
many prisons ... But the Jewish
inmates could not have enjoyed it
any more than they did.
MOST OF THE major decor at
Sunrise Cafe Diner that re-opened on
Northwestern and Beck hopefully will
be completed by this weekend ... The
additional seating is in, and also the
new granite counter, new tables,
padded chairs, leather-type padded
booths ... More seating ... '50s-style
lighting and other changes were still to
come ... It is a seven-day operation
open from until 3 p.m.
Plastic gloves by those handling
food at Sunrise will do wonders in
looks presentation and sanitation ... A
sink for workers to wash their hands is
behind the counter.
REUNION DEPT. ... a 20 year
shindig by the Oak Park High class of
'79 will be Saturday, November 27, at
the Novi Hilton ... Call Lisa Biegun
