In public, he adorned Israel's land-
scape with his buildings. In private, he
celebrated it with rich, expressive
watercolors. Fritz Kornberg (1889-
1944), renowned architect of Israel's
pre-state period, also was a gifted
painter, a talent that has remained
largely hidden until now.
A collection of his luminous water-
colors, depicting scenes of Jerusalem
and the surrounding countryside, are
on display for the first time in
"Architect's Brush: The Watercolors of
Fritz Kornberg" at the Ticho House,
the Jerusalem landmark which
Kornberg himself renovated in 1924.
While contributing his vision to the
public sphere, Kornberg also used his
artistic skills to record a more private
view of the land he loved. From the
terrace of his home in Jerusalem's
Talpiot neighborhood, Kornberg
painted vistas of the Judean Desert,
the Dead Sea and the Hills of Moab.
He used his paintbrush and water-
colors to record impressions from his
journeys around the neighboring
region as well.
Kornberg left his mark on Israeli

architecture by adapting the
International Style to the local culture
and climate. Immigrating to Palestine
from Europe after World War I, he
joined fellow artists and architects in
striving to forge a new design style,
reflecting the pioneering spirit of
Israel's founders.
Ticho House, where the paintings
are on display, was the private home
of artist Anna Ticho and her husband
Avraham until 1980, when it was
bequeathed to the Israel Museum as a
center for the preservation of
Jerusalem's art and culture.

"Architect's Brush: The
Watercolors of Fritz Kornberg
(1889 1944) is on display at the
Ticho House, 9 HaRav Kook St.,
in Jerusalem. Hours are 10 a.m.-
5 p.m. Sunday-Monday,
Wednesday-Thursday; 10 a.m.-
10 p.m. Tuesday; and 10 a.m. 2
p.m. Friday. For more informa-
tion about exhibitions currently
at the Israel Museum, check out
its Web site at www.imj.org.il .
