Diaspora Jews (in particular, American
Jews) appear unwilling to "take risks
for Jewish solidarity." He maintains
that this inconsistent commitment has
created a tension shaping the relation-
ship between Israel and the Diaspora.
Along with his analysis of American
Jewry and portrait of contemporary life
in Israel, Forman offers suggestions for
building a stronger, healthier Judaism.
In Views in Review: Politics and
Culture in the State of the Jews
(Farrar, Straus, Giroux; $25),
Jerusalem native Avishai Margalit, in a
series of essays, considers the Jewish
values and customs advocated by Israel
early in its statehood and their conse-
quences for Israelis and Arabs today.
Margalit, a political columnist and
professor of philosophy at Hebrew
University, also looks at Israeli politics
and culture during the years when the
state faced a huge influx of Russian
and North African Jews, the rise of
ultra-Orthodox fundamentalism, the
peace process and Arab disputes. He
concludes with analyzes of the political
leaders and cultural crises of the con-
temporary Israeli scene.

Fans of military history will enjoy
War in the Holy Land: From
Meggido to the West Bank, by
Andrew Duncan and Michel
Opatowski (Sutton Publishing;
$39.95), which provides a history of
the region's battles, all waged in the
name of religion or in hopes of politi-
cal gain. The illustrated atlas by mili-
tary historian Duncan, a colonel who
served with the British army in the
Middle East, and Israeli cartographer
Opatowski covers every major conflict
since the Battle of the Meggido in
1468 B.C.E. An account of each bat-
tle is provided, supported by a map
with illustrations and photographs of
the battlefield sites, personalities, par-
ticipants and weapons. The last chap-
ter covers details of the Arab-Israeli
peace accord of 1998. A detailed
account of Israel's topography pre-
cedes the historical chronicle.
In Israel: An Illustrated History
(Oxford University Press; $25), Jewish
historian Daniel J. Schroeter takes a
comprehensive look at the Jewish state
in its 50th celebratory year. Schroeter
presents the foundation of the ancient
Kingdom of Israel, the development
of the modern Zionist movement, the
legacy of World War II and the
Holocaust, the creation of statehood
and the Arab-Israeli conflict.
Enhanced by photographs, historical
artifacts, works of art and facsimile
documents, each chapter describes
personalities notable for their faith,
intellect and/or courage. Israel is por-
trayed as a haven for worldwide Jewry
and a land overflowing with a rich
culture. The author specializes in
Jewish history at the University of
California, Irvine.
