HIAS Sponsors Poster Contest HIAS, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, will hold a poster contest for new immigrant youth. This year's theme is "This Land Is Made for You and Me," from the song by Woody Guthrie. The contest is open to youngsters between the ages of 4 and 15. There may be only one entry per contestant and it must be on paper no larger than 20"x24" (50x60 cm), in any medium. Submissions gill be divided accord- ing to age groups: 4-7, 8-11, 1 2- 15. All works will be judged on the basis of cre- ativity, originality, technique and rela- tion to theme. The grand prize winner will receive a $1,000 U.S. savings bond. Three run- ners-up will receive special recognition prizes. All 12 finalists will receive a certifi- cate of achievement and have their posters included in the HIAS calendar for the year 2000. Each participant will receive one of the calendars. The official entry form, which includes a complete set of contest rules, may be obtained at the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, Jewish Family Service, the HIAS Web site (www.HIAS.org) or by calling HIAS, (212) 613-1424. Food Fair At Shir Tikvah /- Congregation Shir Tikvah will host the first Michigan Jewish Food Fair from noon-4 p.m. Sunday, May 2. There will be cooking competitions in five categories: kugels (noodle pud- dings), chocolate desserts, challah bak- ing, vegetarian dishes and stews. The competitions will be judged by Channel 7 reporters John Klecamp and Mike Huckman, Troy Mayor Jeanne Stine, Jewish News columnist Danny Raskin, Detroit News colum- nist Laura Berman and Edith Sleutelberg, mother of Rabbi Arnie Sleutelberg. Prizes will be given for the three top dishes in each category. There also will be a raffle and chil- dren's entertainment and activities. There is an admission fee, which includes five tasting tickets. Additional tickets may be purchased at the fair. There is no fee to enter the cooking competitions.
