Jewish Council
Picks Candidates
The third annual Religious Diversity
Symposium for Oakland Schools will be
held 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, April
22, at Congregation Shaarey Zedek.
Titled "Religious Diversity in the
Public Schools: The Opportunities and
Challenges," the symposium is spon-
sored by the Jewish Community
Council of Metropolitan Detroit, the
National Conference for Community
and Justice (formerly the Interfaith
Round Table), the Oakland County
Schools Superintendents Association
and Oakland Schools.
Professor Ralph Williams, director of
the program on studies in religion at the
University of Michigan, will give the
keynote address, "Of Commitment and
Consensus: Religion and Society in the
American Plan."
Participants will attend workshops on
church-state issues that arise in public
schools as well as presentations by the
Buddhist, Chaldean, Hindu, Mormon,
Muslim, Jehovah's Witness and Jewish
communities.
The Jewish Community Council
announced its slate of officers and board
members at its delegate assembly April
5. The election will be held at the annu-
al meeting May 23.
Nominated for Council officer posi-
tions are: Kathleen Straus, president; Jim
Alexander, Richard Nodel and Ann
Zousmer, vice presidents; Arline Gould,
secretary; Steve Silverman, treasurer.
Nominated for three-year terms on
the board: Dr. Elliot Burns, Robert J.
Dickman, Dan Friedenzohn, Dr.
Bernard Gonick, Micki Grossman,
David Gubow, Brian Halprin, Julius
Harwood, David Hecker, Debbie Levin,
George P. Mann, Shelley Nadiv, Rabbi
Daniel Nevins, Evelyn Noveck, Ellie
Slovis and Audrey Sobel.
Nominated to fill a two-year unex-
pired term: Marjorie Krasnick.
Nominated to fill a one-year unexpired
term: Donald Wagner.
Additional nominations can be made
by petition signed by five Council dele-
gates. Petitions must be received at the
Council office by April 19.
