At Kibbutz

An Israel Independence Day barbe-
cue will bring together visitors from
Michigan and their Israeli partners
in the Central Galilee when
Michigan Miracle Mission III visits
Kibbutz Ein Dor on April 21.
Although Americans from all
over settled the kibbutz, the greatest
number came from Detroit. The
first kibbutz to be established after
the declaration of Israel's indepen-
dence, it celebrated its 50th
anniversary last year.
About 800 people live at Ein
Dor. Since 1952, its ulpan has
helped several thousand new immi-
grants learn Hebrew
The kibbutz has its own high
school, a home for aged and plans
activities for all age groups. Holidays
are celebrated as a community.
Kibbutz Ein Dor has a wine fac-
tory, large dairy herd and meat and
poultry branches; it practices organ-
ic farming. Dorly, a doll factory; as
well as a veterinary clinic and a
wooden reel and drum factory are
located on the kibbutz.
The children's farm at the kib-
butz organizes programs for chil-
dren from surrounding villages. Its
archeological museum fosters coop-
eration between Arab and Israeli
children. Another program for chil-
dren shows them how to press
olives at the ancient olive press and
make and eat pita bread from grains
of wheat they harvest and grind
themselves.
