These ties, which will be marked by an exchange of ambassadors, will sig- nal a formal conclusion to a protracted dispute between London and Tehran. The dispute was sparked nine years ago when the late Iranian spiritual leader Ayatollah Khomeini imposed a fatwa or death decree on British Muslim author Salman Rushdie for alleged blasphemy in his book, The Satanic Verses. Austria Charges Ex-Nazi Doctor London (JTA) — A former Nazi doc- tor who allegedly conducted experi- ments on children and went on to become a celebrated Austrian neurolo- gist was expected to be charged this week with the murder of at least five children during World War II. The decision to try Dr. Heinrich Gross, 83, marks the first time in 20 years that Austria has authorized a war crimes trial. Bombs Damage Latvian Memorial Moscow (JTA) — Two bombs dam- aged a Holocaust memorial in a sub- urb of the Latvian capital of Riga. Chinese Premier Gets Appeal New York (JTA) — New York Rabbi Arthur Schneier urged Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji to make greater strides in addressing religious freedom issues in China. Schneier, who traveled to China last year with two other clergy mem- bers appointed by President Clinton on a religious freedom fact-finding mission, made the appeal last week during Zhu's visit to Washington. The rabbi, who heads the Appeal of Conscience Foundation, also urged Zhu to allow Shanghai's Jewish community to use a newly restored synagogue for Rosh Hashanah services this year, on the 60th anniversary of the arrival of German and Austrian refugees to Shanghai. Record Smooch Goes 30 Hours Jerusalem (JTA) — An Israeli couple kissed for 30 hours and 45 minutes, setting what is believed to be a new world record. Dror Orpaz and Karmit Tsubera, both in their 20s, bested 250 other couples in a contest last week. The lip- locked couple was later treated for fatigue at an Israeli hospital.
