Britain, Iran
Restore Ties

London (JTA) — Britain and Iran were
expected to announce this week that
they are resuming full diplomatic rela-
tions. These ties, which will be marked
by an exchange of ambassadors, will sig-
nal a formal conclusion to a protracted
dispute between London and Tehran.
The dispute was sparked nine years
ago when the late Iranian spiritual leader
Ayatollah Khomeini imposed a fatwa or
death decree on British Muslim author
Salman Rushdie for alleged blasphemy
in his book, The Satanic Verses.

ments on children and went on to
become a celebrated Austrian neurolo-

children during World War II.
The decision to try Dr. Heinrich
Gross, 83, marks the first time in 20
years that Austria has authorized a war
crimes trial.

Chinese Premier
Gets Appeal

New York (JTA) — New York Rabbi
Arthur Schneier urged Chinese
Premier Zhu Rongji to make greater
strides in addressing religious freedom
issues in China.
Schneier, who traveled to China
last year with two other clergy mem-
bers appointed by President Clinton
on a religious freedom fact-finding
mission, made the appeal last week
during Zhu's visit to Washington.
The rabbi, who heads the Appeal of
Conscience Foundation, also urged Zhu
to allow Shanghai's Jewish community to
use a newly restored synagogue for Rosh
Hashanah services this year, on the 60th
anniversary of the arrival of German and
Austrian refugees to Shanghai.

Record Smooch
Goes 30 Hours

Jerusalem (JTA) — An Israeli couple
kissed for 30 hours and 45 minutes,
setting what is believed to be a new
world record.
Dror Orpaz and Karmit Tsubera,
both in their 20s, bested 250 other
couples in a contest last week. The lip-
locked couple was later treated for
fatigue at an Israeli hospital.

Election Pledge: More Settlements

Jerusalem (JTA) — Israeli
Prime Minister Binyamin
Netanyahu promised to
continue settlement expan-
sion during an election
campaign address Tuesday
before some 100 settler
leaders.
His vow came two days
after the visiting U.S.
Assistant Secretary for
Near Eastern Aaffairs
Martin Indyk criticized
Israeli settlement construc-
tion, saying it could ham-

Meanwhile, Jewish settlers
set up four mobile homes on
a hillside near the West Bank town of Hebron. The settlers claimed their
encampment was located within the boundaries of the settlement of Kiryat
Arba, but they left the site after Israeli soldiers declared it a closed military area.
