Having recently married off son
Noson in New Yo r . k, Tobi Samet
comments on the differences
between the two locales: "In New
York, there are kosher catering halls;
they know how to do frum wed-
dings.
"They supply everything for the
ceremony: the chuppah, the mechitza
(partition between men and
women). Here, you have to supply
your own. Everything is an extra
expense. There you could bring your
own wine; here, the hotel
charges a corking fee.
Husband Elliott laughs,
"Just keep the check book
open!" Due mainly to
proximity and price consid-
erations, Southfield's
Ramada Hotel and
Michigan Inn are the most
popular locations for
Orthodox simchas. Other
area hotels which allow
outside kosher caterers
include the Mariott (for-
merly the Renaissance
Center Westin), the Novi
Hilton, the Dearborn
Holiday Inn, the Ritz-
Carlton, the Southfield
Westin (formerly the Radison), and
the Hyatt Regency.
Paul Kohn of Quality Kosher
Catering has used other venues for
kosher affairs. These include Lovette
Hall at Henry Ford Museum, the
Roostertail on Detroit's riverfront,
the Royal Oak Theatre, the Palace of
Auburn Hills, even the Detroit Zoo.
Alan Linker of Sperber's
Kosher Catering likes the
Birmingham Community
House, which accommodates
250. He notes that the Kahn
Jewish Community Center
in West Bloomfield is redo-
ing their social hall, and
thinks the facility will be a
popular place for simchas in
the near future.
Detroit's rwo new kosher
restaurants offer another
option for hosting simchas.
Taste of Class in Oak Park
serves fleishig (meat) and will
accommodate up to 90,
according to owner Miriam
Ehrenreich. Caterer Paul
Kohn's La Difference in West
Bloomfield serves milchig (dairy) and
fish dishes.
Many smaller celebrations are
home based, held in family dining
rooms, finished basements or apart-
ment clubhouses. Mayer Cohen does
50 percent of his catering at Young
Israel or in hotels; the other half is in
private homes.
