I f there's an opera to take audi-
ences into the next century, it
could very well be Three Tales.
The work combines the high-
ly original musical style of Steve
Reich, the breakthrough video art of
Beryl Korot and stage performances
— all in contemplation of three com-
manding and troubling technological
developments of the 20th century.
Although the entire piece will not
be completed until the new century
gets under way, the first act,
"Hindenburg," already is touring and
will be brought ro Ann Arbor April 10
by the University Musical Society. The
piece recalls the crash of the German
zeppelin in 1937 New Jersey.
"Basically, we're dealing with the
early part of the century with

"Hindenburg," says Reich, 62, a pio-
neer in new musical directions who
soon will be working on "Bikini,"
dealing with the atom bomb testing in
mid-century, and "Dolly," the cloned
sheep of the '90s.
"There are 12 musicians and five
singers involved in the Ann Arbor
performance. There are some talking
heads whose speech melodies suggest
some of the music, but most of the
music is really written entirely sepa-
rate from any of the sampled materi-
als. The voices are basically radio
announcers from the '30s, and there
are some noises of the zeppelin."
Known for his use of repeated
rhythms, Eastern instruments and
environmental sounds, Reich has been
thought of as a Minimalist and has
planned his Michigan engagement to
include segments from two earlier
works that represent that orientation
