spring will be the Deli Unique of
Detroit ... next to his Duet at
Orchestra Place.
Matt Prentice has deservedly come a
long way.
THE SUCCESS STORY marking
Mary Tamaroff's rise among the
nation's leading automotive dealers
continues ... he's celebrating 30 years
at his present site in Southfield.
Back in the early '50s, Mary once
took a couple of horses in trade while
he was a salesman at Pappy's Used
Cars on Livernois ... Then in 1954,
Mary opened his own used car lot,
Marwood Motor Sales, on Woodward.
Certainly the farthest thing from
his mind was that he'd one day own a
new car automobile dealership ranking
among the country's most respected.
But in 1963, when he and Jack
Shulman became Marwood partners on
Livernois and Grand River, it was the
beginning of a wonderful togetherness
that lasted until Jack's passing in 1976.
Tamaroff Motors opened its new
and used car setup on Telegraph,
south of 12 Mile in Southfield, on
property that previously had been
farmland ... At the corner of 12 and
Telegraph, a shopping center would be
opening around the same time as him
... Tel-12 Mall.
In 1965, when Mary and Jack
began their quest for a GM dealership,
the automotive giant required that
dealers find their own building site
and, with GM's financial support,
they built the edifice themselves ...
When the doors finally opened on
March 17, 1969, Tamaroff Motors
was the first new car dealership in
Southfield ... paving the way for those
that followed.
As a pioneer in the area, Mary
brought in water and sewage lines and
was instrumental in the ordinance
being changed to allow new dealer-
ships to build in Southfield.
Tamaroff started strictly as a Buick
dealership ... Then came Opel,
Honda, Isuzu, Nissan, Dodge,
DeLorean, Yugo, Rolls Royce and clas-
sic cars ... He sold motor homes, too
... On the east side, Mary had an
Acura dealership franchise, which
today is owned by his and wife Claire's
son, Jeffrey, a fine young man ... it's
Jeffrey Motors on Gratiot.
Main's Tamaroff Leasing business is in
a class all its own ... It doesn't stop at just
automobiles ... Anything is leased that
can be commercially rented ... From
motorized garden equipment to comput-
ers ... and airplanes ... Sam Scotella,
Marv's leasing head for 27 years, has
leased satellite dishes, landscaping
