The Dating Game

Aspiring filmmaker Myles Berkowitz flirts with
the dating world on the big screen.

111Myles Berkowitz was,
for many years, the
familiar Hollywood
archetype: an
actor/writer/director waiting for his big
break. But what sets Berkowitz apart is
that he channeled his frustrations and
actually made it the subject of a film.
At the beginning of 20 Dates,
Berkowitz confesses that he reached a
point of desperation and decided to put
himself onscreen in a low-budget movie
that chronicled "my two biggest failures:
my personal and professional lives."
The New York-born Berkowitz,
now 36, has a political science degree
from the University of Pennsylvania
and a marketing degree from the
Wharton School of Business, but

what he really wanted to do was act.
He performed in commercials and
off-Broadway plays, then wrote
episodic television and screenplays
(with a great lead role for himself),
and still his career didn't take off.
So, recently divorced and re-enter-
ing the dating scene, Berkowitz decid-
ed to make a documentary-style film
— with himself as the guinea pig —
about how difficult it is finding love
in Los Angeles.
But what happened during the
course of 20 Dates surprised even
him: He fell in love, and is now hap-
pily engaged to Elisabeth Wagner,
whom he will marry in October.
As Berkowitz explains via tele-
phone, his cynical outlook was severely
altered, and he even ended up having
