Currently, visitors are able to tour the exhibit-free building on weekends. The unusual zigzag-shaped structure — designed by Polish Israeli architect Daniel Libeskind — has been praised as an architectural masterpiece. Liebeskind, an influential figure in architectural and urban design, is known for introducing a new critical discourse into architecture and for his multidisciplinary approach. Combining powerful visual ele- ments with music and text, the muse- urn has already become an icon of a Jewish presence, and absence, in con- temporary Berlin. The Jewish architect will share his thoughts on the new museum and other recent projects 6 p.m. Monday, April 12, at the Chicago Architecture Foundation. The program is co-spon- sored by Chicago's Spertus Institute for Jewish Studies. Born in post-war Poland in 1946, Libeskind became an American citizen in 1965. He studied music in Israel and New York, received an architec- tural degree from Cooper Union in New York and received a post-gradu- ate degree in history and theory of architecture from the University of Essex in England. He has taught at universities in North America, Europe and Japan and was head of the department of archi- tecture at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills from 1978-1985. The Jewish Museum's shape is based on a Star of David that is inter- sected by a straight line. Libeskind has dubbed the project "Between the Lines" because of the two main lines in the building.
