Alterman helped establish and
develop the Jewish Federation's com-
munity archives in cooperation with
the Jewish Historical Socie t y of
Michigan. She is succeeded by
Heidi Christein, former director of
the Rabbi Leo M Franklin Archive
at Temple Beth El.

class will be on "Expulsion and Its
Aftermath: A Sephardic Diaspora
Continues the Tradition of Glorious
Jewish Culture." At the final session,
Rabbi Nevins will examine "The
Sephardim in Modernity: An
Underclass on the Rise." Textbook for
the series will be Jane S. Gerber's The
Jews of Spain: A History of the
Sephardic Experience.
There is a $25 per person registra-
tion fee, which includes the textbook

Ambassador Naphtali Lau-Lavie,
vice chairman of the World Jewish
Organization, will speak at the Israel
Bonds Women's Division Diamond
Trustee/Prime Minister's Club cock-
tail reception in tribute to Vivian
Berry for her dedication and support
of the Jewish community and the
State of Israel. The reception,
chaired by Barbara Nusbaum, will
be hosted by Dorothy and Bud
Gerson in their home on Thursday,
April 15.
Lau-Lavie was born in Cracow,
Poland, and survived three different
concentration camps. He immigrated
to Palestine, where British authorities
placed him in the Athlit detention
camp.
Following Israel's independence,
Lau-Lavie served in Israel's govern-
ment, including being adviser to
Moshe Dayan and Yitzhak Shamir. He
served four years as Israel's consul gen-
eral in New York.
Lau-Lavie was director-general of
the UJA of the U.S. in Israel before
becoming executive vice chairman of
the World Jewish Organization in
Israel, responsible for political affairs.
His autobiography, Balaam's
Prophecy, was published in the United
States. He is the brother of Israel Lau-
Lavie, Ashkenazi chief rabbi of Israel.

Lorry Cooper of Southfield has
been nominated by Southfield
Public Schools for the annual
WDIV/Newsweek Outstanding
Middle School Teacher of the
Year program. Lorry teaches
eighth grade at Birney Middle
School in Southfield.
Two local students were recently
named to the dean's list at Johns
Hopkins University: Stephen
Aaron Goutman of West
Bloomfield and Jonathan Louis
Golob of Bloomfield Hills.
Goutman is majoring in arts and
sciences and will graduate in
May 2002. Golob is majoring in
biomedical engineering and will
graduate in May 2001.
