Bakers By The Dozen

T

hose approaching the D.
Dan & Betty Kahn
Building of the Jewish
Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit in West
Bloomfield on March 21, and again
on March 28, could be seen sniffing
the air. "It smells like something bak-
ing," many said.
And indeed, as they got closer to
the building, an unusual sight came
into view. Just outside the main door,
a huge, black, cast-iron oven had been

placed, and it was filled with fresh
made matzot.
Inside, on the lobby floor, a cross-
legged group sat engrossed in Rabbi
Yitzchok Bergstein's hands-on demon-
stration of grinding wheat and creat-
ing matzot. And if that wasn't enough
to give away the event-of-the-day,
baker's hats on the heads of children
and parents alike, reading, "I Baked
my own Matzah at the Model Matzah
Bakery" make it quite clear. The
"Matzah Factory," co-sponsored by the
JCC, the Farmington Hills and West
Bloomfield Bais Chabad and Barbara
and Douglas Bloom, was back! 11
