conflict were to spill over into
Macedonia, or into the borders of
Greece and Turkey.
• Hillary' Senate run — "My guess is
that she will back away from running, .
for a few reasons. The most important is
that she will realize she can do more
good for the nation she cares about from
outside the Senate, rather than as junior
senator from the state of New York.
She's in a unique place as a former first
lady, like Eleanor Roosevelt, to advance
the issues she cares about, to speak out,
to shine the light on them."
• President Clinton: lame-duck
domestic agenda? — "The year that a
two-term president has the most polit-
ical power is the sixth year, and the
president lost his sixth year to Monica
Lewinsky. With a Congress controlled
by the other party, my guess is that
not a lot will happen on the domestic
agenda, but he will concentrate on
foreign policy"
• Democrats — "Al Gore is the odds-on
favorite win the 2002 presidential nomi-
nation. Barring some huge change, I
think it will be very difficult for Bill
Bradley to overtake the vice president.
From everything I can tell, he [Gore]
has been the most powerful and influen-
tial vice president in our history. He has
been there. It will be difficult for the
vice president to actually win. What
could save him is the state of the
Republican Party"
• Republicans — "What the Republican
Party needs is someone to say no to the
most conservative grassroots elements in
the party, based largely in the south and
the west, while still keeping the party
unified. George W. Bush is trying to do
that, but we still don't know how he
will react in the heat of a presidential
campaign. It will be difficult for
Elizabeth Dole to make the transition
from public servant to politician. I
wouldn't even be shocked that by the
time New Hampshire rolls around, she
won't even be an active candidate. The
strongest Republican candidate is the
one not running. Colin Powell, but he is
highly unlikely to run.
• The dark horses — Patrick Buchanan.
"The party would unite against him, but
he could cause a lot of trouble."
Dan Quayle. "If you look at the field, he
is trusted by the conservatives, and he's a
lot smarter than people think. If he can
just get the chance to show it, he could
go all the way, if Bush stumbles."
Steve Forbes. "If for no other reason than
he's going to spend another $70 million
of his own money."
