NECHEMIA MEYERS Special to The Jewish News Jerusalem I sraelis are split over Kosovo, with the Left, in general, sym- pathizing with NATO attempts to curb the Serbs, and the Right, again in general, sympathizing with the Serbs. The Israeli government, for its part, has expressed its opposition to the killings "by the Serbs or others" and sent humanitarian aid to the refugees who fled to Macedonia. But Israel has refused to explicitly con- demn the Yugoslavian government or to support the NATO air attacks. Even Holocaust survivors are split, though not necessarily along political lines. On the one hand, the "ethnic cleansing" being carried out by the Serbs reminds some of them of the atrocities perpetrated by the Nazis. Therefore, they favor the bombing of Serb military targets. On the other hand, there are those who-survived the war thanks to the Serbians who fought the Nazis so valiantly: As one survivor asked rhetorically: "How can I look into the eyes of those friends who stood by me in World War II and whose cities are now being bombed?" Hebrew University Prof. Shlomo Avineri understands that Jews saved by the Serbs feel solidarity with them. But, he says, "the heroism of the Serbs in the past cannot justify the atrocities they are committing in 1999." This being an election year, Meretz leader Yossie Sarid took the occasion to criticize the present government for failing to speak out more clearly against the Serbs and to limit itself to sending a plane with blankets, tents and medi- cines for the refugees. He called this "a cynical gesture and said that the Jewish state should not idly stand by while genocide takes place. In a more guarded statement, Attorney-General Elyakim Rubinstein declared that if the reports of genocide turn out to be true, "it is Israel's moral and legal duty to help international efforts to investigate and prosecute those responsible." Right-wing supporters of the Serbs are particularly disturbed by the possi- bility that if Belgrade is being bombed today, Tel Aviv could be bombed tomorrow. David Beden, for example, wrote: "The members of the European Union together with the United States have appointed them- selves the champions of the secession- ist Kosavars, and they enforce their views with incendiary bombs. And since the European Union has also proclaimed itself the champion of a Palestinian state, why should it not also enforce its view with equal force?" In a variation on the same theme, Hebrew University Prof. Yehoshua Porat and Haifa University Prof. • Innovative designs • Impeccable installation • • Incomparable service • 17 years of experience 248.855.8747 Call today for your free in-home consultation eaftea eadd Formerly of The Closet Company, Inc. People walk past burning civilian buildings , the largest military barracks in downtown Pristina, after it was hit by NATO airs strikes early on March 25. In the background is the Grand Hotel, a Pristina landmark. Arnon Sofer say "every bomb that falls on Yugoslavia causes the earth to shake in Israel as well." Opponents of Netanyahu have drawn their own, rather different con- clusions about the implications of events in the Balkans. They argue that the policies of the present government have led to this country's growing iso- lation and to increasing support for the Palestinians. This doesn't mean, they add, that Tel Aviv is about to be bombed in support of Palestinian demands, but it nevertheless has grave implications for Israel's future.
