kiva Hebrew Day School is
rapidly preparing to move
to its new home, the former
Congregation Beth Achim
on 12 Mile Road in Southfield, by
September.
Since January, the former
Conservative synagogue has been
buzzing with activity as construction
workers transform the 1960s building,
originally a church, from shul to
Orthodox day school.
Akiva is preserving the syna-
gogue's two airy sanctuaries, both of
which have colorful stained-glass
windows. It will
use them for
assemblies and
prayer services.
The enormous
social hall is
being divided
into 10 class-
rooms.

extensive office space. Although many
of the planned classrooms have no
windows, the corridors are bright and
sunny, with light streaming in from a
courtyard.
This summer, parents will build a
playground on land behind the build-
ing; in coming years, the school hopes
to raise additional money to build a
gymnasium.
"It will be a brand-new school,"
said Akiva President Michael
Greenbaum, adding that his four chil-
dren are already excited at the
prospect of biking to school next year.

congregation with growing
pains will receive financial
help from the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit for a new school wing.
Congregation Beth Shalom's execu-
tive director, Barbara Cook, said the
Oak Park synagogue won approval of
a grant of not more than $100,000
over the next four years at last. week's
.
Federation board meeting.
Cook said the grant will finance half
of the interest on a five-year construc-
tion loan for the afternoon school,
which has nearly doubled in enroll-

ment, from 107 to 209, over the past
six years. The synagogue is one of the
anchors of the Jewish community in
the Neighborhood Project area of Oak
Park and Southfield. For several years,
Beth Shalom has rented space across
the street on Lincoln at Avery
Elementary, a public school, but con-
