Jewish Literacy

Coalition Launched

\Th

On the heels of the creation of the
Detroit Jewish Coalition for
Literacy, the Jewish Community
Council of Metropolitan Detroit is
bringing the program's national
founder to the community.
Leonard Fein will discuss
"America's Promise: the Jewish
Community's Commitment to
Literacy" at 7:30 p.m. Monday,
April 5, at the Max M. Fisher
Federation Building, Telegraph and
Maple, Bloomfield Township. He's
the director of the Reform
Movement's Commission on Social
Action and the founder of both
Moment magazine and Mazon: A
Jewish Response to Hunger.
The DJCL is an umbrella group
working to increase Jewish involve-
ment in the fight against illiteracy
by mobilizing volunteer readers,
tutors and book drive organizers.
Formed last September, it is an affil-
iate of the National Jewish Coalition
for Literacy, the organized Jewish
community's commitment to enlist
100,000 Jewish volunteers in sup-
port of the Clinton administration's
anti-illiteracy efforts known as the
America Reads Challenge.
As its leader, the DJCL, with 17
organizational partners, has hired
Lauren S. Marcus, an AmeriCorps
fellow. AmeriCorps is the national
service movement that engages
Americans in service to address criti-
cal community problems. Marcus is
a past Jewish Community Council
Project JOIN intern, National
Conference for Community and
Justice administrative assistant and
Office of the First Lady at the White
House student intern.
Council Vice President Ann
Zousmer chairs the DJCL. Members
