Sometimes, we need to change the
quality of our own voices to respond
most effectively to a particular situa-
tion.
Visiting the prison required listen-
ing to a new voice. It required exten-
/'sive preparation and security precau-
tions, working through layers of fear,
and observing Shabbat in ways differ-
ent from normal routines. The
response to this new voice was an
active one — a compassionate, sweet,
and spirited welcome that brought
the prisoners into our collective
hearts and into our Jewish communi-
ty, albeit for just one evening of
prayer and song. In the daily morn-
ing prayers, we bless God for "freeing
those who are bound." Perhaps the
voice we acted on was the voice of
God within us.
One of the greatest lessons of
this experience was that Jewish texts
provide us with rich material that
can help us understand the emo-
tional, spiritual, religious, and intel-
lectual changes we might be going
through. They provide a context for
understanding and living with
changes in our Jewish voices — a
context that helps us appreciate the
important values and teachings of
Judaism. Ei
