Get Off the Road Get In the Club imbalance in assessing compliance with October's Wye accord. On the roster for Thursday's session of the Foreign Operations Appropriations subcommittee are Assistant Secretary of State for Mideast Affairs Martin Indyk, Palestinian and Israeli representatives and relatives of several victims — including Stephen Flatow, whose daughter, Alisa, was killed in 1995. Dore Gold, Israel's United Nations ambassador, said that a key part of the Wye formula was the demand that the Palestinians "put an end to the revolv- ing door" of arresting and then releas- ing Palestinians accused and convicted of terrorism. About 200 Palestinians have been released since mid-December. "About 20 of them are unquestion- able, hard terrorists," said Gold. "This is simply a massive violation." Free Vanunu Rep. Lynn Rivers (D-Mich.) calls con- victed nuclear leaker Mordechai Vanunu a "prisoner of conscience," but said her criticisms do not diminish her support for Israel or a strong U.S.- Israel relationship. Last week Rivers, a prominent member of the small anti-nuclear coalition in the House, joined with 35 Democratic colleagues in a letter ask- ing President Bill Clinton to press Israel to release Vanunu, who is serving an 18-year sentence for telling a news- paper about Israel's nuclear arsenal. Vanunu, 44, has served 13 years of his sentence; last year, his parole request was denied. In an interview, Rivers said her annual plea for Vanunu isn't a case of tilting at windmills — but it's close. "The end of the Cold War has made it harder to draw attention to the nuclear issue, particularly here in the U.S.," she said. "We no longer have these large nuclear nations at each others' throats, so it's harder to engage people. At the same time, she said, prolifer- ation to smaller countries means that the threat continues despite the demise of the Soviet Union. Although she is pressing for Vanunu's freedom, Rivers said she is not singling out Israel. "It's an international issue that has very little to do with Israel," she said. "There is a worldwide movement to retreat from nuclear weapons and to keep other nations from joining the nuclear club; Israel just happens to be the one with a high-profile prisoner."
