changes it will be very hard to envision
the hospice idea to be successfid in Israel."
The next step will take leaders of the
hospice movement, including representa-
tives from Madonna, to Israel in
November, where they will conduct
seminars in as many hospitals as possible.
They are making contact with all
the Partnership 2000 regions operat-
ing from the United States to see if
others are interested in getting hos-
pices going in different areas.
"Obviously, that will help us if
there are more of these type of
Partnership 2000 hospices springing
up around the country," Freedman
said. "Then it could become a move-
ment that feeds from the bottom up."
The leaders also want to create an
advisory board of professionals and hire
a full-time employee.
"We have been in contact with the
administrators of hospitals in Israel
who have shown a lot of interest in
what we're doing in our region and are
thinking of starting their own hos-
pices in hospitals in Israel, Freedman
said. "If we allow ourselves to dream
we might be able to change the whole
health care system in Israel."

Baltimore
Leading Jewish and Catholic theolo-
gians came here Tuesday to take a huge
stride in preparing a first-time joint
declaration against capital punishment.
"We have a consensus position. It's a
question of articulating the language,
said Cardinal William H. Keeler, arch-
bishop of Baltimore and a leader in
U.S. Catholic-Jewish talks. That state-
ment, he added, will be hammered out
at a November meeting in New York
-City with representatives of the groups
meeting here, the National Conference
of Catholic Bishops and the National
Council of Synagogues, which includes
representatives of Reform and
Conservative Judaism's rabbinical and
congregational organizations.
The NCS is the successor to the
Synagogue Council of America. It col-
lapsed several years ago, in part due to
Orthodox groups pulling out of inter-
faith dialogue because they could not
agree with Reform and Conservative
positions. The Orthodox groups
maintain a separate dialogue with the
Catholic Conference, noted Dr.
Eugene Fisher of that organization. fl
