Imaginative dishes take Middle Eastern cuisine
to a new level at Southfield's Flaming Kabob Cafe
DANNY RASKIN
Local Columnist
I
t isn't a big place ... and you
won't find linen napkins or
fancy tablecloths.
But oh, the food ... so innov-
ative in Middle-Eastern dining not
seen anywhere else.
Flaming Kabob Cafe always was
good since opening on Jan. 1, 1996,
in the Southfield Plaza on Southfield
Road at 12 1/2 Mile, but never like
this ... as it continues to celebrate its
third anniversary.
The fertile mind of owner Mouayad
"Moe" Hermiz provides the delightful
differences in Middle-Eastern cuisine
at Flaming Kabob ... That is, if you
want to call it Middle-Eastern ...
Much of the menu carries the names
of traditional Lebanese dishes ... but
they own a different taste blended with
Greek and Chilean togetherness.
A number have new-fangled names
and mixtures that defy the imagination.
When Moe bought the former
Kabob Grill, there were about six or
seven salads on the menu ... Today it is
32 and still counting ... vegetarian,
non-vegetarian, seafood, wild grape
leaves, etc. ... A majority of them are
his own creations.
There's also his best-seller salad that
you won't find anywhere else .. .
Moe's says it came to him in a dream
(as so many others must have, too) ...
It's not even on the menu ... Taco
Salad Flaming Kabob ... triangle-toast-
ed pita with mixed greens, house
dressing, shredded beef, tomatoes and
onions with Moe's own delicious hot
salsa rave he calls Shutah ... Made
with blended vegetables and garlic, it
puts a finishing touch on a fine dish.
There are so many good things
available at Flaming Kabob Cafe that
it's difficult to single them out.
Moe has a great vegetarian pita
stuffed with garlic, fresh olive oil, pars-
ley, tomatoes and feta cheese ... toasted
and cut into triangles much like a pizza.
There's also a healthy dish of
house-seasoned rice, peas and carrots
with grilled chicken breast that people
enjoy with zest.
Sure the regular Middle-Eastern
names and favorites are there ... fat-

What Moe has done in these three
years is little short of amazing ...
It's small wonder that there are
times when people gladly line up
outside to taste his food ... Much
of the fare cannot be gotten any-
where else, so there are no alter-
native places to go for it.
Flaming Kabob Cafe is not just
another good place to get Middle-
Eastern food ... the unique new
dishes with their touches of other
ethnic cultures are endless.
Moe's presence at the restau-
rant is a huge asset ... The hard-
working, smiling owner has a
love affair with food that rivals
the one he has with wife Gloria,
who works side by side with him.
Those who know Moe can't say
enough about him, his food and
service.
