MJAC Plans

The Michigan Jewish AIDS Coalition
received a second grant from The Jewish
Fund. The grant will be used to support
the expansion of two new HIV-AIDS
prevention programs during the 1999-
2000 programming year; an educational
program for the parents of pre-teens and
teens and a follow-up curriculum for
participants in the foundation program
"Choose Life So That You May Live."

Federation Awards
Scholarship Funds

In order to make a Jewish education
more affordable for all families, the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit has awarded scholarships totaling
$500,000 for children in need to attend
Jewish Sunday and afternoon schools.
The scholarship funds were distrib-
uted among 20 schools, congregational
and non-congregational. They are: Adat
Shalom Synagogue, Congregation Beth
Abraham HillelbMoses, Congregation
Beit Kodesh, Bet Chaverim, Temple
Beth El, Congregation Beth Shalom,
Birmingham Temple, Congregation
B'nai David, Congregation B'nai
Moshe, Temple Emanu-El, Temple Kol
Ami, Congregation Shaarey Zedek,
Temple Shir Shalom, Congregation Shir
Tikvah, Congregation T'chiyah, Temple
Israel, Agency for Jewish Education's
Efshar program, FREE/CHAIM, Jewish
Parents Institute and Workmen's Circle
Educational Center.
Each school determined which of its
students would be eligible for the money
More than 1,800 students received
financial assistance from Federation.
Jewish education has been identified
as a priority among Jewish Federation-
funded programs and services, with
scholarship funds rising from $150,000
in 1997 to $500,000 for the school year
starting in 1998.
