`Sivastika'
Remains
The much-debated symbol in the tiles
of the Walled Lake Community
Education Center is staying put,
according to James Geisler, Walled
Lake School District superintendent.
Under fire was a Native American
symbol for good health and prosperity
that looked like a swastika but was the
reverse of the Aryan symbol that the
Nazis appropriated from the Hindus.
"Those people who are offended
are not understanding it," Geisler
said. We feel that we are in the edu-
cation business, and we will take mea-
sures so people will understand what
it is and what it isn't."
Geisler said a temporary display
board will be set up within the next
week, with a long-term display to be
set up in the future.
The symbol was designed into the
floor tiles at the entrance to the 77-year-
old building, which now houses the city's
community high school, as well as day
care and adult education programs. It
was usually covered with a rubber mat,
intended to absorb dirt and water from
the shoes of people entering the building.
A lawyer for the North Oakland
branch of the NAACP and Rabbi
Joshua Bennett of Temple Israel had
called for its removal after a lawyer for
two students at the school said it con-
tributed to racial tension. II

Lansing Weighs
Autopsy Bill
The Michigan House of
Representatives is scheduled to vote
this week on a bill that would allow an
exemption for religious Jews for most
autopsies, according Cindy Hughey,
the Michigan Jewish Conference lobby-
ist in Lansing.
The measure would allow a religious
exemption for autopsies, unless the
coroner has reason to believe that there
is a public health threat or in the case
of a murder investigation. Autopsies
conflict with Jewish insistence that a
body be buried intact.
Hughey said that the Jewish com-
munity has been working on this bill
for about a dozen years. She worked on
the bill last year with 20th District
Rep. Gerald Law of Livonia. The
House passed it too late in the session
for a Senate vote, so the process started
again this year. II

Summertime, summertime, sum, sum
summertime is right around the corner!
And we now are planning our annual Jewish News Summer-
Pleasures section. Can you help us out? We're looking for great
photographs that evoke the quintessential, sun-drenched images of
summer. Kids digging in the sand, a boy sailing on Lake Michigan, a
girl swooshing down a slide, a busy lemonade stand...you get the
idea. Many of your photos will be used in a Summer-Splash photo
spread, while one lucky grinner will grace the cover.
JN
Mail your best photographs to Carla Schwartz, Editor,
Summer Pleasures, 27676 Franklin Road, Southfield, Ml 48034.
Please label your photos on the back with your name, address and phone
number, and also provide a caption. Please mail all photos by April 23, 1999.
