Rose's Story

he Internet can be a medi-
um for ordinary people
telling extraordinary sto-
ries. And it can be a way of
filling in our personal stories.
Bob Becker's simple but powerful
homepage is an example of both. In

tions of 40 of the more than 240
pages, so there's a lot more that we
may eventually get to know about
Rose.
Is it great literature? Probably not.
But its ring of authenticity adds
considerably to our feel for the hard-
ships our ancestors faced.

was born near Minsk in 1887, and
then asks visitors to help him finish
her tale.
The centerpiece of the site is
Rose's autobiography — pages of a
document she wrote in longhand
Yiddish that Becker has pho-
tographed for his homepage.
Called "A Resentful Heart," it is
Rose's gritty, moving account of
shtetl life as many Jews experienced
it — not the charming shtetl of
"Fiddler on the Roof," but a land-
scape of pervasive poverty and bit-
terness.
Rose's story is not without tran-
scendent moments; she movingly
describes the Sabbaths of her child-
hood years as rays of light in a dark,
troubled life.
Eventually, Rose emigrated to
New York, but that part of the story
is available only in Yiddish. One of
the most fascinating aspects of this
site is that Becker provides the entire

gives armchair tourists a surprisingly
vivid glimpse of the tunnels adja-
cent to the Western Wall in
Jerusalem.
The Hasmonean tunnel, you may
recall, was in the news two years ago
when Israel's decision to open a sec-
ond entrance touched off Palestinian
rioting and a major breakdown in
Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.
But politics aside, the tunnels are
a fascinating archaeological site with
huge significance for Jews; this site
uses sophisticated Web design and
multimedia to create some of the
feel of a real tour, without the dis-
comfort or the cost.
The site opens with a well-writ-
ten, concise history of the Temple
Mount and a description of its
archaeological exploration.
From there, the site is organized
like a real tour, with 15 stops — the
same as flesh-and-blood tourists get
in Jerusalem.
