An exhibition of rare and
beautiful objects
of Jewish cultural
heritage visits the DIA.

oth the diversity and unity of the Detroit
Jewish community are reflected and celebrated
with an exhibition coming to the Detroit
Institute of Arts (DIA) March 17-June 6.
Titled "Treasures of Jewish Cultural Heritage from the
Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary," the exhibi-
tion, which showcases important historical documents
beautified with elaborate artwork, is part of the corn-
memoration of the 100th year of the city's organized
Jewish community.
Besides the display of prayer books, marriage con-
tracts, maps and other illustrated texts, there will be
educational programs to explore the times and climates
in which the colorful illustrations were created.
There also will be a companion exhibition Of works
by Huntington Woods artist Lynne Avadenka, whose
"Boundaries of the Universe: A Suite of Prints" has been
shown at the seminary and will become part of the per-
manent DIA collection.
"The 'Treasures' exhibition is really three exhibitions
in one," explains Rabbi Jerry Schwarzbard, the Henry R.
and Miriam Ripps Schnitzer librarian for special collec-
tions at the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS), where
