Israeli Soccer
Club Blitzed

Maccabi Haifa, the Israeli soccer team
that had advanced further in
European club soccer competition
than any other side from Israel, is on
the verge of being eliminated.
Haifa lost 3-0 to Lokomotiv
Moscow on Thursday, March 4, set-
ting them up for an uphill climb in
the second leg of the European Cup
Winners' Cup quarterfinals. The
match was tied 0-0 at halftime, when
Moscow's Zaza Dzhanashia scored a
hat-trick with goals in the 47th, 77th
and 89th minutes.
The next match between the teams
will be played in Haifa on Thursday,
March 18. Haifa would need to win
that match by more than 3-0 to
advance in what is arguably Europe's
second most prestigious club soccer
competition. ❑
