Mrs. Barak and Mrs. Gene, who
are sisters, invited their other siblings'
families to a Shabbat dinner in the
Barak home to help welcome Ron and
Shira, and give them a sense of spend-
ina time with family.
b In speaking to West Bloomfield
High students, Shira said her "goal
was to teach them about another side
of Israel — not what is seen on TV
and the news, but real life."
She said the American teens they
have met have been surprised that nei-
ther she nor Ron lives in religious
homes.
"In Israel, much of Judaism is secu-
lar," Ron said. "The culture is Jewish
— talking in Hebrew, celebrating hol-
idays," and that even in his public
high school, it is typical "to wear a
costume and give mishloach manot on
Purim."
To Shira, being Jewish doesn't have
to mean being observant, she said. "It
is a part of our lives. It is a feeling."
Counsel General Rimon stressed
the importance of the delegates and
their American counterparts learning
about one another, "to collect impres-
sions of what's going on."

Shira felt that a major difference
between Israelis and the rest of the
world is on the subject of peace. "We
all want peace," she said, but she does-
n't believe Americans understand that
Israelis are peaceful. "I don't think it is
so obvious. We go into the army but
we are not a violent people."

Ron, however, found American stu-
dents very much the same as his friends
in Israel. "We all study, we like music,
we do the same things," but sometimes
in a different way, he said. When corn-
paring the use of computers at WBHS,
Shira laughed when students "couldn't
believe we have keyboards in Hebrew
with Hebrew letters."
Beyond the politics and the new
friendships and the comparisons of
life, Shira has another memory of
America to take home. It is where, at
age 16, she said, "I saw snow!" fl
