On the club's 60th anniversary,
renowned composer Ned Rorem was
commissioned to write an original work
for piano and cello. His Dances pre-
miered at the May 6, 1984, concert by
Jonathan Spitz and Frederic Moyer in
Detroit's Orchestra Hall. The club had
aided in the hall's restoration with the
purchase of five seats.
"All these accomplishments required
many hours of volunteer work,"said
Bertha Weil, the club's last president.
"No public funding was ever requested
or provided."
Sources of financing were family-

name funds, voluntary contributions,
bequests, membership dues and concert
proceeds.
"While we are legally dissolving,"
Weil said, "this is not a requiem for the
club since our name will live well into
the next century."
Weil said the remaining club money
will go to endowed and scholarship
funds of music departments at Wayne
State University, University of Michigan,
Michigan State University, Interlochen,
Alyn and the Rubin academies in
Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Contributions
also will be made to the Southfield
Center for the Arts and the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra. The Music Study
Club Board of Trustees can share give
