Tackle Issues

Twenty-nine students from
Congregation Shaarey Zedek and
Adat Shalom Synagogue were enrolled
last month at Panim el Panim High
School in Washington, D.C., an
intensive national learning program
f or Jewish teens.
"The Environment" and "Child
Labor" were the topics of policy ses-
sions. After each session, the students
examined related Jewish perspectives.
"Panim el Panim was an excellent
preparatory program for people who
want to get involved in the political
world," said senior Joshua Berg.
Other participants from metro
• Detroit included Julie Magar, David
Adler, Aaron Beitner, Jennifer Bello,
Ari Breshgold, Robert Brode, Michael
Canner, Alyse Erman, Lysie Erman,
Jessica Fischer, Yaron Fridman, David
Geiringer, Steven Neuman, Matthew
Rappaport, Samantha Rollinger,
Marni Rosenthal, Jared Safran, Julie
• Schiller, Michael Schostak, Jared
Silver, Melissa Taub, Sarah Turbow,
Ryan Vieder and Leah Weiss.
Rabbi Sidney Schwarz, president of
the Washington Institute for Jewish
leadership and Values, spoke on "Jews
in the Political Process." He explored
Jewish involvement in politics and the
need to temper Jewish political influ-
ence with heightened awareness of
Jewish values.
The students, meanwhile, debated
application of Jewish values to diffi-
cult public policy dilemmas. The
facilitators included Jonathan Epstein
of the American Israel Public Affairs
Committee, who spoke about the
relationship between the United States
and Israel.
During their four-day stay, students
visited the Capitol and the U.S.
Holocaust Memorial Museum, and
met with Michigan congressional
staff. Panim el Panim is designed to
stimulate a serious commitment to
Jewish values.
Forty other students from Tucson,
Atlantic City and Syracuse joined the
Detroiters in Washington.
A 1994 Jewish Education Service
of North America study found that
Panim el Panim graduates not only
have heightened Jewish identity but
also heightened understanding of how
Judaism relates to political issues.
There are 5,500 graduates of the
"high school" program from 100
communities across the nation.
