Second-Generation Coaches Highlight Maccabi Lineup Barry Bershad gets animated on the sidelines. in 1995 and '96, those teams went undefeated. Those were pretty cool teams. In my first year at West Bloomfield with Tim Domke, we won about 19 straight games. That was fun. I've been very lucky to enjoy almost every year I've coached, which is a long time." While he enjoys winning, Bershad said his prime focus through his years in basketball has been on the individ- uals he coaches. "I try to be fair to everybody. I try to make it an experience that they'll enjoy because it's just a stop on a long cycle of things," Bershad explained. "I think I've been success- ful at allowing kids to have a good time and enjoy the few years they have in high school." Current Lakers point guard Dani Wohl — who'll play in this summer's Barry Bershad talks to his team. Pan Am Maccabi Games in Mexico — agreed. "It's a fun experience. You work real hard in practice, but we have a good time," Wohl said. "Everyone likes him and we all have a good time — but we still try to win." The Lakers' record under Bershad reflects it. They're at 9-6 overall, including 5-4 in Division III of the Oakland Activities Association. For the coach, however, "rhe winning is really not on the floor. It's seeing people grow up, and grow as peo- ple." Not only does Bershad have his priorities in good order, but he's also fortunate to be perfectly happy where he is: "Becoming West Bloomfield's coach was an honor. It's been some- thing I never thought would happen, so I appreciate every game." This year the Maccabi Games torch passes from Detroit to Houston, Tex., and Columbus, Ohio, and Cherry Hill, N.J., and Rochester, N.Y. — all sites of the next competitions. The torch also is passing in the Metro Detroit Maccabi Club, where three coaches are the second genera- tion in their families to coach a Maccabi Detroit team. Deena Bernstein is a second-gener- ation coach for swimming. A swim- mer on the 1984-1988 teams coached by her father, Herb Bernstein, Deena captured numerous gold medals before joining the coaching staff in 1989. In 1995, Jenny Bertin graduated from being a member of the volley- ball team to being assistant coach to her dad, Ken Bertin. He has been the sport's Detroit coach since 1990. In 1993, Harold Friedman became the club's softball coach. His daugh- ter, Emily Friedman, a member of the 1993-95 softball team, is the newest second-generation coach, signed on as a girls' basketball coach since 1998. Metro Detroit Maccabi Club President Alan Horowitz said he's thrilled to have Maccabi alumni join- ing the coaching staff. "The whole purpose of the program is to create continuity in Jewish kids interacting. The fact that athletes want to contin- ue with the program shows that they also believe it's worthwhile." The 1999 ivlaccabi Detroit coach- ing staff includes: David Disner, Paul Sternberg, Martyr Stein, Jesse Polan and David Levine, baseball; Howard Golding, Steve Bernstein and Jeff Gruca, boys' basketball; Emily Friedman, Heather Meyers and Keith Levick, girls' basketball. Also, Neil Lefton and Rick Kirsch, bowling; Joyce Serri, dance; Alan Adelson, golf; Andy Tucker, gymnastics; Steve Friedman and Rick Zussman, in-line hockey; Al Rosen, racquetball.
