Robert De Niro (Paul Vitti), Billy Crystal (Dr. Ben Sobol) and Lisa Kudrow (Laura
MacNamara) in 'Analyze This." In real life, De Niro is the son of a Jewish mother and
an Italian-Catholic father, and Billy Crystal and Lisa Kudrow are both Jewish (although
the apparently intermarried Kudrow recently told Vogue magazine she can't wait to have
her first Christmas tree). Don't expect any kind of Jewish wedding in 'Analyze This" as
the seemingly Jewish Dr. Sobol marries Laura MacNamara; this is Hollywood

n
Analyze This, opening in the-
aters today, Robert De Niro is a
scream as Paul Vitti, a New York
mobster who is no Teflon Don
— his conflicted feelings over the fam-
ily business stick to him like glue. So,
instead of going psycho, he goes into
psychoanalysis. Billy Crystal is Dr.
Ben Sobol, the unfortunate therapist
chosen to help this mafioso come to
grips with his personal issues.
An upcoming meeting of all the
major crime families in New York is
causing Vitti to experience a string of
panic attacks. Suddenly, he cries at the
drop of a hat and is riddled with guilt
over the illicit activities that rule his
life. Enter Dr. Sobol, who is sure that
Vitti needs legal counsel more than
counseling.
Plus, the neurotic doc has problems
of his own. His impending nuptials to
a whiny newscaster (Lisa Kudrow)
can't seem to go off without a hitch,
and the struggling shrink can't seem to
hold a candle to his famous father —
a highly successful, media-seeking,
Upper East Side therapist.
The doctor/patient relationship has
never been so entertaining and the
awkward repertoire between De Niro
and Crystal is full of classic "Odd
Couple" banter. Crystal is in his prime
as he comes to view the hit man as
just another guy who has trouble redi-
recting his aggression, and De Niro is
perfect as the tough, unenlightened
thug. The unlikely comic duo is heavi-
ly armed with punchy one-liners that
come at you like rapid machine-gun
fire. If only the real mob had such a
quick sense of humor. Rated R. ***
