Oleg Zhivetin Seventy-five Russian productions, including West Side Stag, The Nutcracker and Romeo and Juliet, came to life with the help of his designs. Eighty productions, including Phantom of the Opera, Hedda Gabler and Barber of Seville, have had his attention since he moved to the United States in 1980. "My family settled in Minneapolis before I was able to leave the country," recalls the designer, who no longer prac- tices religion although his forebears were Jewish. "I freelanced for many the- aters in Minnesota, and I worked for developers and architects as a muralist for shoppin g and restaurants. "I passecra test and became a mem- ber of the United Scenic Artists Association and got work in regional theater. I spent four years in Nebraska before moving to Michigan." The designer's wife, Lilya, is an engi- neer who applies her knowledge of com- puters at work. His son has remained in Minnesota, where he is employed as a research analyst for a financial institution. Kaushansky, a workshop leader around the country, connected with the Village players through the recom- mendation of a university colleague. "I think theater is an educational institution," he says. "It makes people laugh, cry and learn something."
