Oleg Zhivetin

Seventy-five Russian productions,
including West Side Stag, The
Nutcracker and Romeo and Juliet, came
to life with the help of his designs.
Eighty productions, including Phantom
of the Opera, Hedda Gabler and Barber
of Seville, have had his attention since
he moved to the United States in 1980.
"My family settled in Minneapolis
before I was able to leave the country,"
recalls the designer, who no longer prac-
tices religion although his forebears
were Jewish. "I freelanced for many the-
aters in Minnesota, and I worked for
developers and architects as a muralist
for shoppin g
and restaurants.
"I passecra test and became a mem-
ber of the United Scenic Artists
Association and got work in regional
theater. I spent four years in Nebraska
before moving to Michigan."
The designer's wife, Lilya, is an engi-
neer who applies her knowledge of com-
puters at work. His son has remained
in Minnesota, where he is employed as a
research analyst for a financial institution.
Kaushansky, a workshop leader
around the country, connected with
the Village players through the recom-
mendation of a university colleague.
"I think theater is an educational
institution," he says. "It makes people
laugh, cry and learn something."
