Israel Bonds
Honors Leaders

State of Israel Bonds plans to honor 18
Jewish leaders from the midwest, includ-
ing Sheldon A. Goldman of Detroit and
Jerome P. Subar of Grand Rapids, for
their commitment to Israel and the
Jewish community
They'll be honored with the
Menachem Begin Leadership Award at
the Prime Minister's Club midwestern
regional dinner April 20 in Chicago.
Guest speaker will be Gideon Patt, State
of Israel Bonds president and chief oper-
ating officer. The Begin Award, named
for Israel's sixth prime minister, cele-
brates community leaders "working
tenaciously today for the Israel of
tomorrow.
State of Israel Bonds is an interna-
tional organization offering securities
issued by the government of Israel.
The State of Israel Bonds Prime
Minister's Club is an honor society of
community leaders who provide
$25,000 or more annually in investment
funds for Israel's economic development.

Register For
Matzah Factory

The Barbara and Douglas Bloom
Matzah Factory will return to the Kahn
Jewish Community Center beginning
Sunday, March 21, through Sunday,
March 28. The factory will offer public
tours on both Sunday afternoons start-
ing at 1:15 p.m. The last tour will begin
at 3:30 p.m.
Admission is $3 per child; there is no
charge for accompanying adults. Each
participant will receive a baker's hat,
grind wheat from kernels, bake a piece
of matzah and create a Passover craft.
School groups may tour, by appoint-
ment only, Sunday mornings and
Monday through Thursday; call Lisa

Building of the Jewish Community
Center in Oak Park is offering a class in

ballroom dancing for fun and exercise.
You'll be ready to take over the dance
floor for that upcoming bar/bat mitzvah
or wedding after learning to foxtrot,
waltz, rumba, swing and more. Dancers
are welcome with or without a partner.
The next Tuesday series of classes is
7:15-8:15 p.m. March 16, 23 and 30.

Free Lectures Explore
Urban Jewish Life

The Cohn-Haddow Center for Judaic
Studies will hold two free lectures as part
of its international conference on "Jews
and the Urban Experience."
Nathan Glazer, a lecturer and sociolo-
gy professor at Harvard University, will
be keynote speaker at the opening ses-
sion, 7:30 p.m. Sunday, March 7, at
Temple Beth El. A reception will follow
his lecture, "Jews and the Urban
Experience: A Historical Assessment."
The closing session of the conference,
with New York University Prof. Jeffrey
Shandler, will be at 8:15 p.m. Monday,
March 8, at Adat Shalom Synagogue.
He will speak on "The Urban Jewish
Landscape in Television: A Multimedia
Presentation."
A dessert reception will follow
Shandler's talk in celebration of the 10th
anniversary of the founding of the
Cohn-Haddow Center on the Wayne
State University campus in Detroit.

pseudonym Julian Kar, Katz co-
authored several books including
Something Borrowed, Something Blue,
which aired as a movie of the week
in 1997.
She is writing under her own
name and is a graduate of Wayne
State University and a veteran jour-
nalist and public relations counselor
who heads her own firm. Besides
writing, Katz paints water collages,
paints on silk and has exhibited her
works. The luncheon will be hosted
by the Movie Groups. There is a
charge. Reservations by March 7.

As part of Temple Beth El's Reach for
Hope suicide and intervention program,
Temple Beth El is offering an eight-week
survivors' support group for families and
friends of those who have attempted or
completed suicide.
The group is facilitated by Dorit
Silver, A.C.S.W., L.M.F.T. and will meet
from 1:30 - 3:00 p.m. on Wednesdays,
March 10 and 24, April 14 and 28,
May 12 and 26 and June 9 and 23, at
the temple.
There is no fee, but pre-registration is

NCJW National
Convention

National Council of Jewish Women,
Greater Detroit Section, will send 24
members to Miami on March 10-14 to
the National Convention of NCJW.
Every three years, NCJW members <
across the country gather to review, alter
and reaffirm the principles that have
guided NCJW sections for over a centu-
ry. Convention delegates determine the
future of NCJW's programs through
their decisions and votes on resolutions,
by-laws, budget and the election of
national officers and board members.

Shaarey Zedek
Bereavement Group

For those in the community who are
mourning the loss of a loved one,
Congregation Shaarey Zedek, in con-
junction with Clover Hill Park
Cemetery, will begin a new eight-week
session of its bereavement support group
7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 18, at the
B'nai Israel Center.
There is no charge for the meetings,
but a commitment for the eight weeks is
desired. The rabbis of the congregations
also will join the sessions.
At the last session, May 28, there will
be a healing service, which will be open
to the community. For information and

Barbara Stollman of Bloomfield Hills was honored in Palm Beach at the 1999 Israel
Bonds Prime Minister's Club campaign inaugural. Presented with the Deborah
Award —Recognition of Leadership, Stollman was cited for devotion to Israel's eco-
nomic development and service to the welfare of the Jewish community Shown are
Irwin Hochberg, national campaign chairman State of Israel Bonds; Gideon Patt,
president and CEO of State of Israel Bonds Organization; Ambassador Dore Gold;
Karin Stollman; Bernard H Stollman; Barbara Stollman; Burton Reznick, chairman
