was not extradited. "We can be disap-
pointed but we can't really influence
the judicial process in Israel, the
United States or any other country,"
an aide quoted Callahan as saying
Israeli justice and political officials
emphasized that Sheinbein would not
get off easily. If convicted, Sheinbein
races a life sentence, which typically
runs for 25 years in Israel. With good
behavior, he could be released after
serving two-thirds of a sentence.
Gansler, who belongs to a suburban
Washington synagogue, said Israel's
missteps in the Sheinbein affair dis-
turb him on a personal level.
"I am disappointed in Israel,
because this ruling didn't make sense,"
/ne said. "It's not even a close call. It
looks bad for the Jewish people
because the United States was in the
forefront of the establishment of Israel,
and has been its biggest ally through
history
"Other countries have laws barring
extradition of their citizens for crimes
committed elsewhere, but Israel is the
only one that also has a formal extradi-
tion treaty with the United States, he
said.
"That's the difference. They passed
a law under [former Prime Minister
Menachem] Begin that basically
trumps the extradition laws. Israel
openly and unabashedly violated its
own treaty with us."
But in Jerusalem, Sheinbein's lawyer,
David Libai, a former justice minister,
said after the court ruling: "Our
Supreme Court again proved to be
independent and did not yield to politi-
cal pressures from the United States." H
