One of the desserts made by Gary,
Key lime pie, features lime juice from .
Key Largo, Florida ... His raspberry
bread pudding, Tropical Paradise
(mango, coconut, bananas, orange,
chocolate mousse), tiramisu, creme
brulee and raspberry cheesecake are
lovely to look at and yummy to eat.
Of course, there are steaks, chops
and chicken ... Show me a good
seafood house that doesn't have them
and I'll show you a place that is turn-
ing away business.
The kids love it, too, at Pompano's ...
They have their own menu with items to
choose from at both lunch and dinner.
And the wine list has almost 50
selections.
Pompano's may be in the Holiday
)Inn of Farmington Hills, but it is by no
means your ordinary hotel restaurant ...
one whose interest seems only to be in
satisfying guests at the establishment.
It caters mainly to the world outside
... and does a fine job of pleasing many
... Pompano's wise choices of seafood
dining is bringing people back for more.
GOING UP AGAINST culinary
• giants like Golden Mushroom,
• Andiamo, Capital Grill, Fox & Hounds,
II Centro, Ristorante Di Modesta and
Unique Restaurant Corporation would
be a challenge for any restaurant ... espe-
cially as a first venture in a competition
that has grown into one of the premier
events in this area.
Cafe Cortina on W. 10 Mile in
Farmington Hills, was a last-minute
• entrant into the recent Fourth Annual
Michigan Culinary Food & Wine
Extravaganza at Mac & Ray's ... and
took first place overall.
Chef Jeffrey Hoffa's presentation of
soft polenta and sauteed filet tender-
loin tips with fresh rosemary tomato
sauce brought owner Rina Tonon and
her general manager son, Adrian, a
cash prize and personalized traveling
trophy to show off for a year's display
at Cafe Cortina.
Second place in the competition
went to Andiamo Restaurants, last
year's winner, with a variety of cui-
sine from its four spots ... There are
five now that Andiamo Osteria in
Rochester has opened ... Royal Oak
_soon will make it six.
Third place went to Unique
Restaurant Corporation, represented
by its Northern Lakes Seafood Co. in
Bloomfield Hills
Best overall display was given to
Ristorante Di Modesta in Southfield.
About 900 people tasted the food,
drank wine and danced away the
evening, which brought $85,000 to
