movie actress Norma Desmond as she
chases a fresh chance at stardom, the
issue of what aging means to career
claims the spotlight.
"I'm totally sympathetic to Norma,"
Schulman says about the character
played March 2-21 by Petula Clark at
the Detroit Opera House. "I think that
everything that she does comes out of
a deep-seated terror that she's been
passed by, that she's obsolete, that she
can never claim the present again.

loony. Although she's definitely gone
over to the other side, it's not without
cause. She was the greatest star on the
screen, and suddenly, the world has
passed her by. She no longer knows
who she is because everything about
her has to do with film. Who she was
had to do with a world of fantasy, and
that fantasy has changed without her c--<
being able to change with it.
"Her fear is a very great fear that
everybody has when growing older. I feel
it, and I'm nowhere near Norms age. I
think that the emphasis on youth in this
country, especially in the performing
arts, has gone a little overboard."
Schulman, who also directed The
Sound of Music currently on Broadway,_,
broke down a lot of barriers as she
built her professional credentials. A
graduate of the Yale University school
of drama, she started off as an actress-
dancer because directing was a territo-
ry roped off from women.
