What would be your campaign slo-

He did, and we will miss him.

nd portraitist Barbara Abel will dis-
play her hand-printed photograph
panic Attack in "Women in the Visual
rts — 1999," a national exhibition
)uried by former Whitney Museum of
Ar t curator Elizabeth Sussman.
Abel is one of 29 artists selected from
more than 700 entries from the United
States and abroad for the 13th annual
6ktiibition, which runs March 3-27 at
the Erector Square Gallery in New
Haven, Conn.
"Women today are pulled in many
directions with responsibilities and
commitments to their families, jobs,
house, clubs, etc. They try to do
everything well and that's the prob-
lem," says Abel. "Many women can-
keep up
with this hec-
tic pace and
are falling
apart inside,
while trying to
keep a calm,
pleasant facade

phenomenon
known as "a
panic attack," adds Abel, and she has
tried to address it with her hand-
printed color print. "The image in
Panic Attack is not of a real woman,"
ays Abel, "but of an antique wax
mannequin replica of a woman who
lived 100 years ago and is today show-
ing the ravages of time."
Abel won the curator's choice award at
last year's "Women in Visual Arts" exhibi-
tion for Perfection, her color print of
another antique wax mannequin replica.
It made a statement on the perception of
7 '_7-muty in today's society. For more infor-
mation, call the gallery, (203) 787-3175.
Closer to home, Abel is showing 12
of her hand-printed color photographs
depicting characters from Tennyson's
Idylls of the King at Flint's Buckham
Gallery through March 5. For addition-
al information, call (810) 239-6334.
