High School junior Ryan Rubens, a
Temple Beth El member, said he
went to the convention "because it
seemed like a fun thing to do." He
saw a friend he hadn't seen since
sixth grade.
The delegates' main job was to
represent the region in voting for
the 1999-2000 National Board. The
delegates adopted resolutions that
included accepting gays, lesbians,
bisexuals and transgenders. In addi-
tion, they approved a resolution
mourning the death of Jordan's King
Hussein.
Attendees could attend work-
shops including ethics to social
action, Internet censorship, abortion
and the Jewish response, and inter-
dating.
Keynote speaker Marta Kaufman,
producer of the TV shows "Friends"
and "Veronica's Closet," shared her
experiences of being a Jewish moth-
er in Hollywood.
Another favorite speaker was
David Sapperstein, from the
Religious Action Center in
Washington, D.C.
The convention was highlighted
for many by a trip to Universal
Studios, where the entire lower por-
tion of the park was reserved for the
NFTYites. Participants enjoyed vari-
ous rides, such as Jurassic Park, a
dance, and catered eats.
Cranbrook junior and Temple
Israel member Michelle Hutton, of
West Bloomfield, a candidate for
1999-2000 regional president, said
her favorite part of this year's con-
vention was "being able to reunite
with friends from KUTZ and meet-
ing others from across North
America."
Because the convention took
place over a weekend, Shabbat pro-
gramming was incorporated. The
theme for the Friday evening service
was "Rock 'n' Roll," incorporating
melodies into the traditional
prayers, and the Shabbat dinner
included singing by all the delegates.
Services were also an option each
morning before breakfast.
"It provides them with a sense of
spirituality that is difficult to get
otherwise," Klein said. "All the kids
'that went are very into it, and what
they didn't conceive of is how many
people identify with them." LJ

Jodie Kaufman is a freelance writer
and a senior at Cranbrook-Kingswood
High School in Bloomfield Hills.
