The Hebrew word "bayit" means
both house and home, and while
these words are highly charged in
most languages and cultures, in
Israel they carry extra weight. In the
collective psyche of Israelis "home"
carries connotations of a national
homeland for Jews, a geopolitical
entity and a source of shelter, as well
as a physical dwelling.
The exhibition is an introspective
examination of the many Israeli
approaches to "home," uncovering
five decades of ideological, political,
emotional, and material transition.
Representing dichotomies like vul-

nerability and power, loss and cele-
bration, poverty and wealth, and
harmony and war, this rich collec-
tion of works portrays both interiors
and exteriors. Many depict local
architecture in relation to its envi-
ronment in landscapes, the central
motif in Israeli art for the first six
decades of the 20th century.
Mounted from the Museum's collec-
tion and from public and private
collections throughout Israel, the
exhibition includes works by many
of Israel's leading artists: Nachman
Gutman, David Reeb, Tamar Getter,
Drora Dominey, Pinhas Cohen-
Gan, Arie Lubin, Ruth Sarfati,
Liliane Klapisch, and others. 17
