Communication
The Splendors of Spain, Portugal, & Gibraltar
Ban Berkowitz and Mona Shane offer these tips for keeping lines of communi
cation open and healthy:
• Keep a loving attitude, with positive thinking.
• Use words like ''would" or will instead of could or can. Offer a choice.
Don't generalize.
• Use "I" statements. Take responsibility for your own feelings.
• Try not to use "you" statements. They can be accusatory and lead to defensive
reaction.
• Remember that tone of voice and body language are important.
• Be an active listener, use good eye contact, and sit quietly.
• Learn to resolve differences and compromise.
• While discussing a problem, stay focused on the issue, problem or behavior.
Don't attack each other.
• Keep focused on the current problem. Don't bring up other past, present and
predicted future problems.
Communication can be difficult and time consuming. Successful couples
need to be committed to each other and to the therapeutic process.

he take the class. He and fiancee Mary
Robin, 23, have been engaged for just
one month, and plan to be married in
October. They, too, are seeking advice
in how best to blend their religious
backgrounds.
Like many other couples in this
situation, the one thing that needs to
be learned and practiced most is the
art of compromise. While not from a
Jewish background, Robin has agreed
to raise their future children
Jewishly.
Beale grew up with a more
Orthodox/Conservative background
and understands that religious ser-
vices recited only in Hebrew would
not be very meaningful to his future
bride. Together, the couple found
Temple Israel, and feel comfortable
attending its services. Taking the
workshop is a natural extension of
their exploration together.
—
Robin hopes that, through the
class, they will gain "a better under-
standing of each other, as well as the
institution of marriage itself." She
likes the workshop because she under-
stands that "(marriage) is not always
happy happy, joy joy. It's good to
hear the opinions of other couples as

we form our own.
Margie Komer, 31, met fiance
Barry Kaplan, 31, at Jewish
Federation's YAD bar night. The cou-
ple has been engaged for a year and
will marry in May. They are attending
the workshop to learn how to better
communicate with each other. And,
like others, they are enjoying the
