Jewish National Fund will hold Green
Sunday, its annual phonathon, 9 a.m.-2
p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, at the offices of
Zalenko & Associates in Southfield.
JNF volunteer solicitors will call
households in the region, detailing
Israel's water shortage and the scourge of
forest fires, 1 million new immigrants
and an irregular rainy season, all of
which have impacted the water supply.
"By speaking with donors and updat-
ing them on JNF's miraculous transfor-
mation of water resources, which has
helped us clean up Israel's rivers, plant
olive and citrus groves and build fish
ponds in the desert, we will enable all of
our donors to participate in a program
of tikun olam, which is the Jewish pre-
cept of repairing the world," said Robert
B. Levine, national campaign chairman.
The Jewish National Fund is the
American fund-raising arm of Karen
Kayemeth Leisrael (KKL), which is the
official land agency in Israel on behalf of

all Jewish people everywhere.
Through its fund-raising and educa-
tion efforts, JNF supports KKL in the
reclamation of land for planting and
forestry; environmental concerns; water
conservation; recreation and agriculture;
employment of new immigrants;
tourism and research and development.
Environmentalists in Israel are calling
for a restriction on watering gardens
during the daytime, limiting the
amount of water used for agriculture,
industry and public facilities like hotels,
restrictions on car washing, and raising
the price of water to reduce demand.
Israel's main water aquifer stands at four
inches above the water crisis line.
"Israel uses over 99 percent of its
available water resources," said Ronald
Lauder, JNF national president. "The
well-being of Israel depends upon all of
those people who make a personal com-
mitment and encourage others to be
generous, because JNF is our link to the
people and land of Israel."
To plant trees for all occasions, call
the JNF National Donor Relations
Center, (800) 542-8733.
